The aim of this paper is to compare and contrast multiple questions containing a
coordination in French and Hungarian. The first part provides an overview of multiple
questions with special emphasis on their possible interpretations. It is argued that
although pair-list answers are the default answer type given to a multiple question (and
single-pair answers are a subcase of those, related to a unique event or a uniqueness
presupposition), they can be the result of two factors: a D-linked question word
(‚matching questions‘) or a thematised element of the question (multiple answers). The
next section enumerates the possible syntactic structures of these multiple questions in
the two languages and assigns an underlying syntactic structure to them (monoclausal
vs. biclausal). The basic properties of coordination are also presented and it is pointed
out that the coordination of question phrases in Hungarian seems to contradict those
properties, but the first steps of a possible solution is put forth. Finally, the interpretation
associated with these structures is examined and it is observed that all these question
types can license pair-list and single pair answers, although the pair-list answers they
license is in most cases multiple answers and not matching answers.

I. Introduction
